Kupittaa Park
Turku's Oldest Urban Park & Tranquil Green Paradise
Discover Kupittaa Park
Step into Kupittaa Park and be instantly embraced by the serene Nordic greenery. No commercial bustle, just endless lawns, lush trees, crystal-clear lake waters, and winding paths — every corner radiates natural healing energy. I visited on a summer morning, sunlight filtering through branches to create dappled patterns, a gentle breeze carrying subtle fragrances of grass, flowers, and greenery. The lawns were vast and soft, the lake calm and clear, waterbirds swimming leisurely, century-old trees standing quietly, telling stories of 170 years. Park visitors moved at an unhurried pace — joggers on paths, picnickers on lawns, children playing joyfully in Mini-City, their laughter echoing through the gardens. Vintage sculptures and commemorative plaques dotted the landscape, adding profound cultural depth to the natural scenery. There's no rushing here, only slowing down and finding peace. In the evening, the setting sun bathed the gardens in warm golden hues, the lake sparkled, and tree shadows stretched gently — Kupittaa Park perfectly blends Nordic serenity with urban vibrancy. Healing and beautiful.

The Charm of Kupittaa Park
170 Years of Royal & Urban History
Kupittaa Park's origins trace back to 1820, initially a promenade beside a spa bathhouse. In 1852, architect Gustav Strengel formally designed and built it, becoming Finland's first planned urban park. The park's Sacred Spring holds legendary history — it's said that in midsummer 1155, Bishop Henry baptized Finland's first pagans here. In the 18th century, this served as a spa bathhouse, carrying Finnish religious and secular historical memories. After completion, the park underwent multiple expansions and renovations, adding outdoor pools, children's playgrounds, and sports facilities, gradually developing into an urban green core integrating natural landscapes, historical sites, and recreation.
Architecture & Garden Features
Spanning approximately 24 hectares, the park features expansive lawns, formal gardens, winding paths, and lake scenery as its core, complemented by vintage sculptures, commemorative plaques, and century-old trees. Home to Finland's oldest outdoor swimming pool (built 1912), Mini-City for children, and adventure playground — natural landscapes and recreational facilities blend perfectly. 19th century Nordic Romantic garden style, balancing English landscape natural wildness with French garden formal layouts, featuring smooth flowing lines and rich plant layering.
Cultural Significance
Turku's urban green lung, the core gathering place for locals across generations, witnessing Finland's transformation from medieval times to modern era. The Sacred Spring carries legends of Finland's 1155 baptism, serving as a spiritual symbol of Finnish national culture and representing Nordic outdoor lifestyle aesthetics. For centuries, Kupittaa Park has witnessed Turku's evolution from medieval town to modern city, transforming from exclusive royal noble territory to shared public space — today it remains an irreplaceable spiritual retreat for locals.
Outdoor Swimming Pool
Finland's oldest outdoor swimming pool, built in 1912, remains the most popular summer facility. The pool sits adjacent to the lake, allowing swimmers to enjoy lake and mountain views simultaneously. Open summer (June-August): 09:00-20:00. Admission: Adults €20, Students €15, Children €10. Check daily water temperature forecasts in advance and avoid peak hours.
